LTE: Pushing for Medicaid requirements counterproductive

Bozeman Daily Chronicle

The current debate over Medicaid expansion is frustrating. Both parties – Republicans and Democrats alike – agree that the Medicaid expansion should continue. They certainly should, considering it has saved millions in general fund dollars, added more than 5,300 jobs, and had a net positive impact of $6.5 million to the state.

One in 10 Montanans are insured by Medicaid, which enables them to see doctors and get the heath care they need. The state’s uninsured rate has dropped from 20 percent to seven! Statistics show more people are getting preventative screenings, like breast cancer screenings, and more people with disabilities and mental health issues are getting the care they need.

Despite these proven successes, some legislators are pushing for additional requirements on Medicaid eligibility, including a work requirement. This is both unnecessary and worse, counterproductive.

The reality is most people and families accessing the Medicaid expansion are, in fact, working. Among those who aren’t currently working, a vast majority – one study mentioned 91 percent – are not in the workforce for legitimate reasons such as being ill or disabled, being in school, or taking care of family members. Why would we want to deny these people healthcare coverage?

If lawmakers are concerned about Montanans staying in the workforce, keep them healthy! Do not kick them off their Medicaid coverage. We can’t go back to the way it was when one in five Montanans were uninsured. We’re seeing progress; let’s keep Medicaid expansion as it is.
