LTE: Medicaid is very important to veterans

Helena Independent Record

Among all of the uncertainties America’s veterans face upon returning home from service, health care is always a top concern.

As a proud resident of Montana and a Marine Corps veteran, I am often frustrated by the misunderstanding surrounding Medicaid, especially among rural veteran populations. The scope of the program in the lives of veterans is undeniable — nearly 2 million U.S. veterans and their families rely on this important government program to receive their health care. Medicaid’s expansive network of coverage allows it to reach Montana’s rural veterans where the VA cannot.

Additionally, Medicaid is the only source of health care coverage for 40 percent of non-elderly adult veterans. It has also played a significant part in reducing the rate of uninsured veterans.

I hope more of Montana’s veteran population comes to appreciate the important role this program plays in our lives.
